Eucratoscelus pachypus

Tanzania Stout Leg - complete care guide

Tanzania Stout Leg

Intermediate care Requires consistent husbandry - more sensitive to ventilation, humidity, or feeding schedule. Some experience recommended. πŸ•³οΈ Fossorial Lives underground in deep burrows. Needs deep, packed substrate to dig. You may rarely see them - patience required. 🌍 Old World ⚠️ Defensive Will adopt a threat posture (rearing up, showing fangs) when disturbed. May bite if provoked. Approach with care and use a catch cup for rehoming. πŸ•ΈοΈ Heavy webber Dense, prolific webbing behaviour. Will carpet the entire enclosure in thick silk - this is normal and healthy. Provides a visual indicator of the spider's territory. Old world Family: Theraphosidae

About

The Tanzania Stout Leg - an arid-country oddity unmistakable at a glance: normal front legs, then two enormous club-shaped rear pairs used as digging shovels and anchors. A statue-still pet hole that excavates deep vertical shafts in hard Tanzanian scrub soil, then explodes into motion when molested - defensive with assumed-potent Old World venom, but far more manageable than the Asian earth tigers, and often recommended as a first fossorial Old World for that reason. Sporadic UK availability makes CB stock worth grabbing.

Field Notes
01

What size enclosure does a Tanzania Stout Leg Tarantula need?

Adults

25 Γ— 25 cm footprint with 15-20 cm of firm substrate.

Slings & Juveniles

Small tubs with 8-10 cm of firm substrate and a starter hole.

To map exact floor space and substrate safety limits for your setup, use our free interactive tarantula enclosure planner.

02

What temperature and humidity does a Tanzania Stout Leg Tarantula need?

Heating

The Tanzania Stout Legs is comfortable at 24-28 Β°C. UK homes need supplementary warmth for much of the year; warm the room, never the tank floor.

Humidity

50-65 %: dry substrate, full water dish, occasional corner overflow to keep the deepest layer slightly humid.

Ventilation

Cross-ventilation with a dry setup - arid fossorials need airflow, not humidity.

03

What substrate is best for a Tanzania Stout Leg Tarantula?

Recommended Mixes

βœ“ Topsoil with a little sand βœ“ Coco fibre / topsoil mix βœ“ Organic topsoil (fertilizer-free)

Depth

15-20 cm

Notes

Deep and FIRM - a topsoil/sand or clay-rich mix that holds vertical shafts. Dry above, faint moisture at the very bottom.

04

How do you set up a Tanzania Stout Leg Tarantula enclosure?

DΓ©cor

🌿 Cork bark (burrow anchors) 🌿 Flat stones (level and stable) 🌿 Fake plants 🌿 Firm soil / sand substrate

The Hide

Its own vertical shaft - provide 15 cm+ of firm substrate; the reinforced rear legs excavate soil most species could not hold.

Water

Always provide a shallow water dish at surface level.

Lighting

No special lighting needed. Ambient room light is enough.

05

How often should you feed a Tanzania Stout Leg Tarantula?

Slings Every 5-7 days (fruit flies, pre-killed crickets or tiny roach nymphs).
Juveniles Every 7-10 days (small crickets or roach nymphs).
Adults Every 10-14 days (medium roach) - slow metabolism, ambush from the shaft mouth.

Good Feeders

πŸ¦— Crickets πŸͺ³ Dubia roaches πŸͺ³ Red runner roaches πŸ¦— Locusts

06

Is my Tanzania Stout Leg Tarantula dying or moulting?

Pre-moult signs to look for

Refusing food for weeks is normal before a moult - a healthy Tanzania Stout Leg Tarantula fasting is almost never an emergency in itself. Watch for slowing down and spending more time in the hide, sealing the burrow entrance with silk (a sealed door usually means "do not disturb - moulting in progress"), laying a thick moult mat of web on the floor. Old World species do not flick urticating hairs, so there is no bald patch to watch - rely on fasting, lethargy and hide time instead.

On its back is MOULTING, not dying

A Tanzania Stout Leg Tarantula lying upside down or on its side with legs curled inwards is almost certainly mid-moult. Do not touch it, do not right it, do not mist it - just remove any live prey (crickets can kill a defenceless moulter) and leave the room.

How long between moults?

For this species, expect a moult roughly every 24-48 days for spiderlings, every 55-90 days for juveniles, and every 130-210 days for sub-adults, with adult females moulting around every 10 months (up to 14.7 months at the extreme). Males never moult again after their ultimate (mature) moult.

After the moult: fang hardening time

The new exoskeleton stays soft, with fangs that cannot grip, for roughly 7 days in this species. Offer no food and no handling for about 7 days - feeding too early is how fresh moulters get injured. The shed exuvium is also the best sexing tool there is - see our tarantula sexing guide for what to look for.

Genuinely worried about behaviour that is not moulting? Our "Is my T okay?" triage tool walks the danger signs one by one.

07

What ongoing care does a Tanzania Stout Leg Tarantula need?

πŸͺž Moulting

Moults at the bottom of the shaft, entrance often plugged. Do not dig. Keep the water dish full and wait until it reopens and hardens. Adult intervals apply to mature FEMALES - a mature male never moults again.

🧹 Cleaning

Weekly: refresh the water dish and clear surface boluses. Deep clean rarely, with a catch cup ready.

βœ‹ Handling

Not handled - reclusive but explosively defensive when exposed. Catch cup for rehouses.

08

What are the most common mistakes when keeping Tanzania Stout Leg Tarantulas?

βœ“ What They Love

  • Very deep substrate with a soil/sand or clay mix
  • Dry-side setup with a full water dish
  • Warm stable temperature
  • Long tongs for all maintenance
  • Enjoying the excavation mounds - the club legs at work

βœ• Common Mistakes

  • Loose shallow substrate - the burrow is the point
  • Wet substrate
  • Free handling - Old World venom
  • Startling it into a defensive burst during maintenance
